Cross Check is a transnational cooperation and exchange project involving three art institutions from Germany, Greece, and Denmark: the Kunstverein Bochum, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rethymnon, and the Sydhavn Station exhibition space in Copenhagen. Through exhibitions and accompanying events such as performances, discussions, and workshops, Cross Check brings together artistic perspectives from the three countries and creates a space for cross-border dialogue and discourse. The Kunstverein Bochum kicks off the series, with the exhibition opening on October 11 at 3:00 p.m.
At the heart of the project is an artistic exploration of the perception and construction of reality in contemporary Europe against the backdrop of current political and social transformation processes. Art is understood here as an open, pluralistic medium for bringing different perspectives to light and fostering understanding. Cross Check views European diversity as a shared potential and makes the European ideal visible and tangible as a lived practice.
The core group of artists consists of Chris Doulgeris (Athens, GR), Anne Langgaard (Copenhagen, DK), Tine Bay Lührssen (Düsseldorf, D), and Evangelos Papadopoulos (Düsseldorf, D). In addition, artists from the respective countries are involved at the individual exhibition venues. In Bochum, Matthias Schamp, among others, is featured as a guest artist with a performance.
A central work in the exhibition is Anne Langgaard's floor piece Common Ground—a Euro pallet cast in bronze, fragmented, and transformed into a staggered sculpture. As a standardized yet largely invisible piece of infrastructure, the Euro pallet symbolizes the Europe-wide movement of goods and the exchange of commodities. Through its artistic transformation, Anne Langgaard's work reveals the structures that organize movement, access, and community. Common Ground refers to a shared infrastructural foundation that connects European countries while simultaneously reflecting its fragility at a time when shared structures are increasingly being called into question.
In her installation Display and Options, Tine Bay Lührssen draws on the aesthetic forms and concepts of the historical avant-garde. At the beginning of the 20th century—long before political visions of a united Europe took shape—these movements formed a network of cultural exchange across national borders, with centers in Paris, Berlin, Zurich, and Milan. Against this backdrop, *Display and Options* can be understood as a model of a European space of experience. Fluid constellations of bodies, surfaces, and interstices create a variable structure in which boundaries do not appear as fixed dividing lines, but rather as fluid and negotiable structures.
In his project Optography, Chris Doulgeris explores issues of sustainability and the use of resources in both European and global contexts. His conceptual approach incorporates highly aesthetic prints produced by damaged, malfunctioning printers; the printers themselves as sculptural objects; and carpets hand-woven by workers in developing countries. Against the backdrop of rapidly unfolding political events, motifs such as the printers' last breath or the equal coexistence of different modes of expression become legible metaphors that foster greater public awareness of inclusion, diversity, and freedom of thought.
Evangelos Papadopoulos's works operate at the intersection of virtual and physical reality and fundamentally challenge our notions of what appears to us as reality. Fragments of the physical world are digitally transformed into new, hybrid forms that always bear traces of their physical origins and digital manipulation. In an era when the hubris of digital media is having an increasingly problematic impact on democratic societies, Evangelos's works—even in the digital realm—direct our gaze back to the factual nature of physical reality.
